Definition:
The overall purpose of coach-mentoring is to provide help and support for people in an increasingly competitive and pressurised world in order to help them:
- Develop their skills
- Improve their performance
- Maximise their potential
- And to become the person they want to be
“Our lives are not determined by what happens to us, but by how we react to what happens to usâ€
Clive Gott – Believe and Achieve
- One to one developmental discussions
- Coach asks How?
- Feedback on both strengths and weakness
- It is aimed at specific issues/areas
- Relatively short-term activity, except executive coaching which tends to have longer timeframe
- It is essentially a non directive form of development
- Individual takes action/responsibility for his/her choices
- It assumes that individual is psychological healthy – not requiring clinical intervention
- Personal issues may be discussed but emphasis is on performance at work
“He that is good with a hammer, tends to think everything is a nailâ€
Abraham Maslow
How does it happen:
- Setting the objectives – what is it that I want?
- Look at reality – where are you now?
- Options – considerations of how to move from where you are to where you want to be.
- Commit to action – targets to achieving your objectives
“It’s not who you are that is holding you back ….. it is who you think you are notâ€
Maxwell Maltz – Phycho Cybernetics
